The Apprentice UK series five, final episode

In the final, Kate Walsh was facing off against Yasmina Siadatan. The task was to make a brand of chocolates and market it. As always in these tasks the former candidates were brought back to help the two final contestants.

It was a joy to see Ben Clarke and Philip Taylor back, one in each team. Each with their own quirky take one things. Ben as always had some good ideas, but then always tried to ruin said ideas by making them too sexual. Philip went for really out there ideas. This time he wanted chocolates marketed for men. Fortunately team leader Yasmina decided to get feedback and found that men didn't really consume chocolates. So she quickly changed the theme to chocolates with unusual or shocking flavours.

Kate initially prices her chocolates at mid-market, but is persuaded by her chocolate making team to go a bit more expensive so that they could produce some decent chocolates. Yasmina as ever was keenly focused on price and went for the bottom end of the market and wouldn't be budged.

Both presentations were good. Yasmina's packaging and price had the edge, but Kate's TV commercial and the chocolates themselves were better.

In the end Sir Alan chose Yasmina. Kate in pricing too high, had missed the point of what a business was all about, which was margins. Yasmina had focused on the important things, the price and packaging, and as Sir Alan observed, in a real life situation the chocolates could have been improved afterwards by trial and error, but there would have been no comeback for Kate's chocolate business no matter how good they tasted, because no one would have forked out to buy enough boxes to make her proposition viable.

I thought Yasmina was the worthy winner of this series. I think this has been the best series so far - the candidates genuinely had talent, and they were also more normal - competing hard, but also co-operating and getting on when they had to, just like they would in a real world business situation.

The Apprentice UK, series 5 episode 11

This week's episode was the interview episode where the candidates were all grilled about their CVs.

Lorraine predictably got roasted for her intuition and eccentric style and James McQuillan got taken apart for the jokes he put on his CV. Kate Walsh fairly sailed through hers, not putting a foot wrong.

For me, the surprises were Debra Barr and Yasmina Siadatan. Debra was brilliant in the interviews. She had toned down the aggression and was simply confident. Yasmina on the other hand fell apart. Though she runs a restaurant, she clearly had a very poor grasp of what turnover, pretax profit and post tax profit were. She was upset that the interviewer had got hold of her accounts, not knowing that every business's audited accounts are submitted to Company's House where any member of the public can view them.

In the end, Kate and Yasmina made it to the final (I had expected it to be Kate and Debra). It should be interesting to see who wins the show.
