Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is a US drama shown on ITV2. It's ostensibly a high school drama about a group of rich young New Yorkers, and follows the machinations of the way they all interact and fall in love.

However, it's not like most high school dramas, where you get rebellious youth who dress differently from their parents and experience first love and experiment with sex. It's not even like high school dramas of the Buffy variety where geeks try to cope with being ostracised by the mean popular kids by banding together.

No, the horrible fascination of this drama is that because they are all rich trust fund kids, their parents take an interest in their dating lives, with fathers trying to manipulate pairs together for business reasons, and mothers trying to make their daughters dress as sexily as possible to enhance their dating potential. The young lives have a bitchy competitiveness that is an exact mirror of their parents lives - indeed these poor kids are taught to behave like this for the rest of their days.

Therefore rebellion is not about staying out late, or sulking or having illicit underage sex or even about not doing homework. No, rebellion is about rejecting the machinations of your parents and being nice and human!

It's a compelling program just because you wonder if the main character Serena will manage to pull off rare achievement of being non-manipulative and nice.

If you missed episode one, you can watch it online on ITV catchup - it will be there for another six days.
